WHO WE ARE
CHEERIO Publishing is an eclectic, independent publishing imprint and production company launched in 2020 in association with The Estate of Francis Bacon.
We commission innovative books and films that confound received ideas and open the door to new perceptions. We aim to bring unusual books to a mainstream audience. In the spirit of Francis Bacon’s work, we are here to intrigue, disturb and thrill.
Our name, CHEERIO, is a nod to Bacon’s favorite drinking toast and our logo takes inspiration from Bacon's art; the lightbulb, a recurring motif in his paintings, is one of the few objects that is never distorted in his work.
FRANCIS BACON
Francis Bacon (1909-92) is widely regarded as Britain’s greatest modern painter. Drawing on low-art sources, including photographs torn from magazines and imagery from films, coupled with a keen awareness of the rich historical tradition of painting stretching back to the Renaissance, Bacon developed a way of portraying the human body which was unique. His mastery of the medium of paint was recognised early. By 1946, the critic Kenneth Clark felt able to state simply: ‘Francis Bacon has genius.’
