CHEERIO Editions 1.1: Memory
by George Shaw
CHEERIO Editions are a series of small-format pamphlets published by CHEERIO three times a year, in January, May and September. Each edition will feature one commissioned writer, whose piece will respond to an annual guiding theme, which contributors are invited to interpret freely. Published alongside our existing programme, CHEERIO Editions will allow us to platform a wider range of voices, ideas and forms. The series is intended to give contributors the freedom to approach the theme from their own perspective and in the form that best suits their work.
For thirty years George has been painting the landscape of the place in which he took his first steps. Poussin described himself as making a professsion of mute things and for the most part my own paintings resist narrative, story and characters and remain silent. He has long believed this to be a symptom of amnesia and boredom. There is simply nothing worth the bother of recollection from a background in an English midlands suburb that could be anyone or everyone but probably no one. This piece of writing will either be a confirmation or a denial of this pathology.
